An AI assistant on your site: when it helps

An AI chat can be added to a site in an evening these days. It is polite, answers instantly, and never takes a weekend off. So it seems it could replace both the form and the manager. In practice a good AI assistant solves a narrow task, and a bad one confidently promises clients things you do not do.

Below is when such a chat is genuinely useful, what it should base its answers on, and how to hand the conversation over to a real person.

Which questions it can handle

AI does well with repeat questions whose answers already exist in your texts:

  • Timelines, payment and delivery options, return terms
  • What a service includes and how the plans differ
  • How to prepare for a booking or consultation
  • Where to find a particular page on the site

If most of your enquiries look like this, the chat will take some of the load. If every enquiry is unique and needs a calculation, it will help less.

What it should draw on

The key question is not which model to use but where the chat gets its facts. It should answer from your materials: site pages, the price list, terms, a list of common questions. If the answer is not there, the right response is “let me check with a manager,” not an invented price or deadline.

The materials need updating along with the site. If prices change and the chat’s knowledge does not, it keeps quoting the old ones.

Handing over to a person

A good chat knows when to stop. A complex question, a complaint, readiness to order, or simply a request to talk to a human should lead to a real employee. It works well when the chat collects the name, contact, and gist of the question and sends it to a work chat in Telegram, like an ordinary request.

The visitor should also understand what happens next: a reply today, tomorrow morning, or during working hours.

Risks worth knowing

  • The chat can make mistakes or invent an answer, so it should not be trusted with promises on price, timing, or guarantees
  • Visitors may type personal data into the chat, and you need to know where conversations are stored
  • An AI service charges for every conversation, and a bot caught by spam can get expensive without limits
  • It should be clear to the visitor that they are talking to a program, not a person

How to test it before launch

Collect a list of real questions your clients ask and run them through the chat. Add awkward ones: about discounts, competitors, things you do not do. See where the chat honestly hands over and where it starts making things up. Repeat this check after every change to the materials.

What else to check in solutions built with AI is covered in the note on AI-written code.

Sometimes, instead of an AI chat, it is enough for requests to reach you fast. How to set that up is described on the page about requests in Telegram. If you want to discuss a chat for your site, use the contact form.
